At a Sunday afternoon Jam Session in 1962 an idea was born. That idea eventually became the Bay Big Band. The Band was led by Stan Farnsworth and included local musicians Ken Hayman, Paul Gillett, Dave Hall, Ken White and Cedric Sutherland to name but a few. These men all well known in the Jazz and Big Band world were a huge influence to the success of the Band.
Over the years different leaders made their own contributions with different sounds and styles but essentially kept to that BigBand Swing. Immediate past leader Leith Milson, introduced a vocal group adding another dimension to the repertoire. Mention must also be made of the contribution of the past leader, Neil Randrup, who now in his eighties is still active with the Band.
In 2004 the band became the Tauranga Big Band and from 2005 to 2007 under Musical Director Murray Mason it has become sought after in both New Zealand and Australia.
One of New Zealand's leading Big Bands, the Tauranga Big Band has a repertoire that encompasses Jazz, Swing, Funk and Popular music. With some of the most respected musicians in their field in the country, we can guarantee an exciting and enjoyable function for all.
